Tweetable Takeaway: Glenn Howerton gives 1 of his best performances as Dennis when he & Mac move to the suburbs in @AlwaysSunny.

It's no hole-and-corner that, equally long-running as Information technology'Southward ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA has been, it has never been nominated for an Emmy, nor have any of its cast (at least not for Sunny itself). They've even poked fun at this in an episode seasons ago in which Paddy's Pub is never nominated for the Philly Bar of the Year Accolade; it always goes to some other brightly lit bar whose bartenders have a will they/won't they thing going. I've always been a fan but I've never felt slighted by Sunny's lack of recognition–it's a niche thing, and its fans should know that.

But after last dark'southward episode, they must consider Glenn Howerton for Best Supporting in a Comedy for his role as Dennis. He doesn't have to win, just at least put him upwards there.

The episode begins with Dennis and Mac lamenting how they've been trying to find a reasonable place to live in Philadelphia, since they burned down their last hire-controlled edifice, and have been living with Dee ever since. Finally they decide to rent a place, a overnice house in the suburbs. Frank points out that these two are "city scum" and not cut out for the 'burbs. The guys disagree, and then a wager is made: if Dennis and Mac can survive in the Suburbs for a calendar month, Frank will pay their rent for a year. If they tin't, Dennis and Mac accept to sleep with an sometime man for a yr. Information technology'south on.

The following one-half hour of television is a irksome burn that culminates in large laughs. You know where it'south going from the start. Mac and Dennis are non going to win this bet. But the writers take the fourth dimension to prepare a lot of details (Mac'south "Famous" Mac & Cheese he makes for himself and Dennis every dark, the beeping fire alarm/rattling puddle heater keeping them sleepless, the annoying neighbor asking "It's a hot ane, huh?" over and over and over) and they all accept a skilful pay-off. Mac and Dennis quickly starting time to lose it–Mac reduced to a stay at abode wife who tin can't go anything accomplished, and Dennis commuting an 60 minutes into the metropolis (with many exclamations of "Fat pig!") to work all day.

Something about it was reminiscent of The Shining. A tale of isolation, Dennis and Mac'due south sanity is worn thin by their mundane routine. Things get-go to become surreal. At one point Dennis finally confronts his neighbour for trying to brand small talk about the weather with him one also many times. Dennis strips downward donkey-naked and asks his neighbour if he knows what it'due south like to exist in a tempest of fists pummeling his breast, then screams the well-nigh key visceral non-words scream athim; I was one-half expecting a fire-breath issue to be put in. Information technology is GLORIOUS.

When Dennis has lost information technology, Glenn Howerton has never been more at the top of his game. The mode he snaps at Mac. The mode his optics convey such a dead soul in i 2d and in the next an insane fiery hatred. And to play such rage off comedically is such a difficult chore. I have to give props to the make-upwardly artist, too, who did Howerton's makeup for the scene in which Mac feeds him his "Famous" Mac and Cheese, containing bits of the recently deceased dog Dennis had bought him. Howerton has never looked more like a man on the brink of a consummate pause with reality. It's dark comedy firing on all cylinders here, and Howerton is fueling the whole machine. Rob McEllheny holds his own reverse him (they have been working together for eleven years at present, so he should) only simply doesn't hold a candle to Howerton comedically. He couldn't pull this off. Not many could. Which brings me to my adjacent point.

I genuinely think the entire cast is truly talented. Charlie Day is probably the breakout star from the prove and general fan favorite. Just, human being, Glenn Howerton is just And so on point and in such a unique way; Dennis actually isn't like any other master comedic character on idiot box. Every comedy has the dumb guy (Charlie), the meathead (Mac) and, the sassy/dorky girl who drinks as well much (Dee), and, though not equally detestable as DeVito'due south Frank, the racy erstwhile man has been on the ascent, too (think Chevy Chase in Community for one instance). Withal Dennis is something else. He's the smartest of the bunch, only deeply flawed. He's the rich asshole, but his course is all false. He's a womanizer, just gets in his own way trying to charm them. Oh, and there's a running gag that he is a series killer.

You can't get this anywhere else, and watching Dennis' slow demise into insanity was maybe my favorite moment of his in the show. Charlie often gets the spotlight, but he was barely in this episode, and so Howerton got the chance to smoothen. I only hope come awards season he finally gets a little love he deserves. If not, he may strip and scream at the states.
